The Royal Mail Awards and reluctant primary school readers
![]() |
We are delighted that a donation from Crerar Hotels has made it possible for us to open up the 2008 Royal Mail Awards to reluctant readers in primary schools by involving them in judging the early years category of the Royal Mail Awards.
If group organisers (you may even be an ASN teacher) are interested in taking part in this way we suggest you use one of the following methods:
- Paired reading in primary school: We think this is ideal for less confident P6 and P7 readers as although the reading material in the early years category is of a younger reading age than material for their age group, they won't feel patronised by it as, in the paired reading scheme, the purpose was to read and find out the views of their younger peers. Click here for more information about paired reading.
- Reading the shortlisted books out to your reluctant/ASN primary school children, talking to them about their thoughts about them and asking them to vote for their favourite books.
- Paired reading in secondary school - same principle but this time S1 pupils read the picture books to children in one or more of your feeder primary schools. This is also an ideal way of building links with your feeder primaries. Either or both sets of children may be reluctant readers or ASN pupils. Click here for more information about paired reading.
Support from Scottish Book Trust for organisers involving reluctant primary school readers and/or ASN primary pupils in the awards
To help you take part in this way and thanks to the support of Crerar Hotels, Scottish Book Trust is providing:
- Free copies of shortlisted picture books, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to overwhelming demand we are sorry to say that there are no more free copies to be given out.
- Resources to accompany shortlisted picture books, tailored specifically to reluctant readers/ASN pupils and judging the awards in a paired reading scheme
- Opportunities to take part in Scottish Book Trust's research and evaluation of the project
Register now if you would like to take part in the awards in this way.
